The Diocese of Virginia’s retreat center in Orkney Springs, Virginia is the home of the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, a historic outdoor worship space that serves as the seat of the Bishop of Virginia. Known as “Shrine Mont,” the retreat center serves as a wonderful venue for parish weekends away from the hustle and bustle—helping those who worship and serve together to experience new heights in the mountains through conversation, hiking, prayer, golfing, reflection, games, porching, s’mores, worship, and love. You may have your own fond memories of sleep-away camp or weddings at Shrine Mont. This “place apart” has helped generations experience God’s love.
St. James 2017 parish retreat at Shrine Mont will kick off Friday, June 23rd with dinner at 5:30 in the Virginia House dining hall. Registration (and porching) will begin earlier that afternoon. After dinner, board and card games, snacks, and drinks will provide an opportunity for fellowship. Saturday features a number of optional activities including scripture reflection, a trip to the Route 11 potato chip factory, an adventurous hike to North Mountain or a more leisurely walk to the cross, and a labyrinth prayer walk. Live from Shrine Mont on Saturday night, a campfire sing along with s’mores!
The high point of the weekend is worship at the Shrine on Sunday morning after which we will gather for a bountiful fried and baked chicken feast and then leave for home. You will come down from the mountain, but the experiences you shared with God and your brothers and sisters at St. James will remain. Relax, reflect, rejoice!
